Atlanta homeowners usually deal with one of two cockroach problems. The large roaches many Southerners call palmetto bugs or water bugs mostly live outdoors in mulch, leaf litter, gutters and crawlspaces, and wander inside, especially in hot, humid weather. The small German cockroach is an indoor pest that lives in kitchens and bathrooms and can spread through apartment buildings, used appliances and cardboard boxes. The treatment is very different for each, so the first question to answer is which one you have.
Large outdoor roaches usually respond to exterior treatment, sealing gaps around doors and pipes, and cutting back moisture and debris around the foundation. They're often covered by a general quarterly pest plan. A German cockroach infestation usually needs targeted interior work, such as baits, growth regulators and careful cleanup of food and grease, over more than one visit. In apartments and condos, it may also need coordination with neighbors or the property manager.
In Georgia, cockroach control falls under the structural Household Pest Control license (Category 29). Look the company up on the Georgia Department of Agriculture's license search, and expect a service record after each visit naming the product, its EPA registration number, the target pest and the areas treated. If you've already tried store-bought products, follow the label exactly, since EPA notes that using a pesticide inconsistently with its label violates federal law, and tell the company what you used and where.
Atlanta Pest Guide is a referral service published by Cornelia Cove LLC. Requests go to independent local pest control companies, which quote and carry out their own treatment plans.

What Affects the Price
Providers quote their own work — these are the factors that consistently move the number.
- Species: German cockroaches usually need more interior visits than outdoor roaches
- How widespread the activity is, and how many rooms or units are involved
- Number of follow-up visits included before you pay for more
- Preparation and cleanup the company asks you to do, and whether it's included
- A one-time treatment vs. adding roaches to a recurring plan

Cockroach Control FAQs
Are palmetto bugs the same as cockroaches?
Yes. 'Palmetto bug' and 'water bug' are local names for the large cockroaches common across the South. They mostly live outdoors and wander inside. They aren't the same as German cockroaches, the small species that lives and breeds indoors, and that difference changes how they're treated.
How many visits does cockroach treatment take?
Outdoor roaches are often handled within a regular pest plan. German cockroach infestations commonly need more than one interior visit. Ask the company how many follow-ups are included, what it needs you to do between visits, and what happens if you still see roaches afterward.
What license does a cockroach exterminator need in Georgia?
A structural pest control company license with a certified operator in Category 29, Household Pest Control, plus registered technicians. Check the company on the Georgia Department of Agriculture's structural pest control license search.
How should I prepare for cockroach treatment?
Ask the company for its written preparation instructions, because they differ by product and method. Many involve clearing cabinets, cleaning up food and grease, and fixing leaks. Don't spray store-bought products right before a treatment unless the company says it's fine.
Will a quarterly pest plan cover cockroaches?
Usually for large outdoor roaches, but not always for German cockroaches. Some plans treat an active German cockroach infestation as an add-on. Read what the plan covers before assuming it does.
